Writing Through The Dimensions Of Being: Yoga to Overcome Obstacles to Writingwith Aggie Stewart, MA, RYTThe act of creative writing is a healthy, often healing, and potentially transformational experience. The nature of what we bring to the act of writing, however--from our bodies, to our minds and hearts--can carry obstacles into the writing process that make it difficult to access these positive qualities and get our work done.
Yoga can help.
Yoga offers tools, such as asana, pranayama, chanting, meditation, that can help writers deal effectively with obstacles to the writing process. The Yoga tradition also offers a model for conceptualizing and understanding aspects of human experience that account for the ways in which we encounter ourselves, others, and the world around us, including the work that we do as writers. Known as the Panchamaya model, it envisions five dimensions or aspects of the human system:
- physical,
- psycho-emotional,
- mental,
- higher intelligence or personality, and
- bliss or joy.
Looked at through the lens of this model, obstacles to the writing process can be seen to operate within one or more of these dimensions. By working within this model, we come to know ourselves better, particularly the obstacles that challenge us in doing our work and where they reside within us.
Writing through the Dimensions of Being shows writers how to overcome obstacles to writing through the application of specific yoga tools within yoga practice. Learn how the complementary practices of yoga and writing are mutually supportive and how, together, they help bring us into a more authentic relationship to ourselves and to our work, making the work easier, more satisfying, and more joyful. Experience how combining both practices helps us to access our creative source more directly, more genuinely, and more reliably.
