Back Care Basics: A Pain Free Back with Aggie Stewart

Back Care Basics: Building the foundation for pain free back Are you in the 50% of the population that experiences chronic backache? Yoga can offer relief -- that is, the right kind of yoga.
Ground breaking research has shown that the regular practice of therapeutic yoga can reduce discomfort and movement restrictions experienced around generalized low back pain. It can also minimize reliance on pain-relief medication, improve quality of life, and reduce the number of doctor's visits.
Back to Basics: Building a Foundation for a Pain-Free Back introduces students to yoga tools and techniques for overcoming generalized low back pain and building a sturdy foundation for good low back health.
Appropriate for yoga students of all levels, the series introduces both seasoned practitioners and beginners to the appropriate application of yoga therapeutics for low back health.
The methodology used in this series is based on the yoga practices that have been studied and endorsed by the National Institutes of Health, which found the therapeutic yoga studied to be more effective than physical therapy or a book on exercises for low back care.
Each class consists of asana (physical postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), relaxation, and instruction in body/breath awareness. Students will complete the series with a solid understanding of yoga practices that •. stretch and strengthen the low back, •. help manage stress, and •. promote relaxation.
Back Care Basics Level 1: Just as a tree’s strength starts at its roots, low back health starts with small yet mighty muscles in the pelvis and at the base of the spine. Learn how to activate and strengthen these core structures while discovering the role that stress plays in generalized low back pain. This six week workshop sets the foundation; some students find it is enough to prepare them for Back Care Basics Level 2; others find that Back Care Basics Level 1 is worth repeating to deepen its great benefit.Back Care Basics Level 2: After you've completed Level 1 and are no longer experiencing pain on a daily basis, Level 2 is the next step - helping you build strength and stability to prevent periodic episodes of pain.
Yoga for Core Strength and Stability is our maintenance program for graduates of Back Care Basics Levels 1 & 2
IMPORTANT NOTE: Back Care Basics is designed for people who experience generalized low back pain due to muscular strain, injury, or weakness. It is not appropriate for people with more serious structural conditions, such as stenosis, severe scoliosis, or spondylitis, or who have had recent back surgery.
While yoga practice can be very good for more serious back conditions, such as stenosis, severe scoliosis, or spondylitis, or for who have had recent back surgery, it is best to work with a qualified yoga therapist to custom design an individualized yoga practice.
Breathing Time Yoga has 2 qualified yoga therapists on staff. If you have a more serious back condition, please call the studio for additional information about meeting with one of our yoga therapists.
